On terminology

bitcheshavebirthdays:

Be very sure you mean dysmorphia. You probably mean dysphoria. If you’re avoiding it because you think it’s a trans word, don’t. It isn’t. Using dysmorphia, which is a different term meaning something else, as if it’s interchangeable, is an issue in and of itself, so be sure you’re using the word you intend.

I would be careful using the phrase “association with a character”. Partly because fictionkin includes species and indeed simply being from a ‘verse*, but partly because enough people think relating to a character, identifying with a character, is being fictionkin as it is. Lumping all these strong feels into fictionkin devalues them IMO, as well as diluting what fictionkin means. It’s an identification as a character.

You manage to acknowledge non-spiritual ways of believing there, I think, with the association comment, but then go on to highly spiritualise everything else. For example, if someone’s identity is non-spiritual, there’s absolutely no reason their identities would “stack”. In fact, there are spiritual reasons for identity that would not result in the “stacking” effect you describe.

I would also question that a fictionkin awakening typically involves being so traumatic, but I know my experience of the community has been different, and I tend to be cynical of a lot of what I do see. Often for good reason, but YMMV.

Contrary to how this sounded this was actually good-ish post lol there were just a few points that bugged me.

*would that be defined as being the ultimate sidey-side-character? An OC? I have no idea. I don’t generally see it called either.

Thanks for all the feedback! I’m glad the post was good, even if it did have some problems. I do mean dysmorphia ( a body image mismatch) though I should probably include dysphoria as well.

Can you help clarify to me the difference between a ‘non-spiritual’ fictionkin and someone who just relates to/identifies with a character? As a highly spiritual kin, I’ve always had a problem understanding people who don’t see it as a spiritual/magical thing; and I’ve been making an effort to acknowledge that it can be a legitimate thing.

Understanding how being a non-spiritual fictionkin can go beyond just associating with the character would really help me out.
