I honestly don’t understand “fictionkin”, nor can I take it seriously. To many Otherkin, our connection to our kin is a spiritual emotional bond, and to say you are spiritually connected to something as silly as your favorite Legend of Zelda character is ridiculously insulting to individuals such as myself. If anyone was to shed light on fictionkin, I would appreciate it but until then I will only find it laughable.

Hi wildkaiju, I’m sorry you haven’t yet had an opportunity to be educated on the fictionkin subset of otherkin. Sadly, despite we as a community having been around for more than ten years now, many still don’t understand what being fictionkin means.

Like any otherkin, fictionkin see their identity as something more than it is now. For many this means that we believe we are the spiritual reincarnation of characters or members of species portrayed in fictional media, just like the rest of the otherkin community. We believe in the many worlds/multiverse theory that many kin do, which states that everything, including magical creatures, and anime characters, exists somewhere, and we believe that we are connected to that somewhere, just as other otherkin do. It is no sillier to say ‘I am this fictional creature’ and have it be a pikachu than it is to say ‘I am this fictional creature’ and then have it be a unicorn.

Likewise for ‘specific’ characters. Every otherkin I have ever known has had memories of the story of their life- they were a speific elf/wolf/dragon, with a name, and a history. Likewise, we fictionkin have names and histories. Names and histories which have coincidentally been recorded in human fiction.

(Some fictionkin however are non spiritual and dont believe in souls/magic and thus believe that their identity stems from a psychological/neurological basis.)

Being fictionkin is not about ‘favorite characters’ or even being drawn to or identifying with characters. It is about deep, core identity. It is about looking at something on the screen, or on the page, and getting shivers. Feeling your mind and soul pulled back to a time when you were different. Fictionkin experience memories, phantom limbs, shifts, nostalgia and the like, just like any otherkin.

There are trolls, fakers, and pranksters in any community, and the fictionkin community has had its share. However, we as a whole are serious, thoughtful, and just as real in our beliefs, as any otherkin out there. To say that we ‘insult’ your believes is an insult to ours.
